Her work also encompasses performance artwhich she performs in both English and Japanese and filmmaking. Ono grew up in Tokyo and also spent several years in New York City. She studied at Gakushuin Universitybut withdrew from her course after two years and moved to New York in to live with her family.

Soon after I sit down to talk with Yoko Ono, I knock my glass over, spilling water all over the huge mosaic-topped table that dominates her big, comfortable kitchen. As she grabs a cloth to wipe up, she sweetly tries to put me at ease, gently saying that people often find it overwhelming when they first visit her rather grand apartment overlooking Central Park in New York. Then she shakes her head in disbelief.
